| To commemorate the merger of the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) with the Swiss Tropical Institute (STI), the 14th STI Symposium is built around the theme of “Environmental health: here and there”. A diverse set of case studies will be featured, both from industrialized countries and developing world settings. This thematic focus reflects the substantial body of research, teaching and training of the merged STI/ISPM centred on environmental health issues worldwide. The symposium will take place 10-11 December 2009 at the Bildungszentrum 21, Missionsstrasse 21, CH-4055 Basel, Switzerland. Registration is free, but space is limited so please register online. R Anderson, L Bisanti, D Ippoliti, J Danova, B Forsberg,S Medina, A Paldy, D Rabczenko, Christian Schindler, and P Michelozzi for their paper on Heat Effects on Mortality in 15 European Cities, published in Epidemiology 2008;19: 711-719. The paper makes an outstanding contribution to environmental epidemiology, and was selected for its quality, originality, importance and expected impact. |

| As of May, Nino Künzli has taken his new responsibilities as Chair and Professor of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Basel. The collaborators of ISPM are highly pleased and warmly welcome him. The election of Prof. Nino Künzli is an important step to strengthen the competence in Public Health at the University of Basel, a process which will be developed together with the Swiss Tropical Institute. Since 2006, Künzli was ICREA Research Professor at CREAL in Barcelona . (ICREA). |
