Welcome
As the new Professor of Public Health at the University of Basel Medical School, Prof. Nino Künzli , MD PhD, welcomes you to the website of the former Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine. It was a great pleasure to take over this promising Institute from Prof. Charlotte Braun-Fahrländer , MD, in May 2009 and to lead the implementation of the visionary decision of the University of Basel to strengthen Public Health through the integration of ISPM into the former Swiss Tropical Institute (STI) .
Since 2010, the joint institutes operate as the new Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute – Swiss TPH. The two institutions always shared a common vision to improve public health through high quality science, teaching and services. Together we will be stronger.

A further important step to strengthen Public Health at the University Basel was the decision of the University to fund an Associate Professor position for Public Health (Extraordinariat). It is our great pleasure that we were successful in recruiting Prof. Nicole Probst-Hensch to this new position.
Her research unit Chronic Disease Epidemiology as well as all other research groups of the former ISPM and the units of the former STI Department of Public Health and Epidemiology (led by Prof. Mitchell Weiss) now form the new Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH, led by Nino Künzli) of the Swiss TPH. The Unit of Biostatistics and Computational Sciences led by Prof. Tom Smith – with >30 collaborators the largest unit of EPH – reflects the merger of the units of biostatistics of the two institutions. BSCS continues to offer high quality advisory service to the Medical Faculty as well as other faculties and institutions.
The integration of the content of the former ISPM website is in progress. Until its completion we keep this ISPM website open without further development. Thank you for your interest and patience.
Prof. Nino Künzli,
MD PhD; Deputy Director Swiss TPH and Head of its Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. Research member of the Chronic Disease Epidemiology Unit. Chair for Social and Preventive Medicine / Public Health, University Basel Medical Faculty
From Octobre 2005 to April 2009, ISPM was directed by Prof. Dr. med. Charlotte Braun-Fahrländer .
As of May 2009 ISPM has 58 staff members , of whom 85% are financed with external funds obtained through high-level competition. ISPM Basel is heavily involved in teaching at pre- and postgraduate level; we lead numerous local, national and international research projects . Our literature review data provide an important public service particularly concerning current knowledge on the health effects of air pollution and electromagnetic fields.
